You can bike, drive, or even walk into Historic Todd.  only five miles to enjoy fresh baked muffins and coffee at the Todd Mercantile.  If you are looking for activities, RiverGirl Fishing Co. is in the old Todd Train Station and Kelly will be glad to take you fly fishing, or drop you in for a leisurely paddle or tube down the oldest river in North America. Biking on the Railroad Grade Road is also a popular pastime along the New River in Todd (see the RiverGirl for rentals). The Elk Knob State Park (elev. 5600 ft.) is a short drive away and a hike to the top provides an incredible panoramic vista as well as a keen view of the Long Hope Valley which is considered one of the biological crown jewels of the Southern Appalachians, overshadowing even the Great Smoky Mountains for its diversity of plant life. The are is home to many parks and nature areas. Our favorites are Grayson Highlands State park just over the line in Virginia, and Linville Gorge National Wilderness Area just south of Boone.  For biking, our favorites are The Virginia Creeper Trail, Railroad Grade Road, and the New River Trail State Park starting in Fries, Virginia.  Other natural areas include Mount Jefferson State Park, Grandfather Mountain State Park, the New River State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park.  The area is known for its famous ski resorts suitable for families and individuals of all skill ranges. Also nearby are NC game-lands such as Three Top Mountain.
